TToT34: Quickie

This is my poor excuse for a TToT post this week. At this moment, I am cleaning house after our fourth set of houseguests in a little over a month, setting it up for the possibility of more houseguests soon, laundering and packing three people's clothes for a trip (tomorrow), tolerating a twitching eyelid and an upset stomach, fighting the urge to close my eyes for just a few minutes, and on an emotional level, feeling both extremely needy (thank you, clark and zoe) and extremely needed.

It's been a doozy of a week.

And, you might think, having houseguests can't have helped. But, let me tell you: they did. We've had wonderful adventures, and we've stayed up late catching up on everything from birth to death, and these guests walked in the door and started picking up up all the slack I kept dropping. Forget to chill the beer, defrost of the meat, set out the napkins, move the laundry? Without a word, these folks took care of it.

They've kept my children while I performed community service, they've hosted my house guests, they've sat with me in the hospital, and this week, they did the housework that kept slipping my mind. Aside from family, I wouldn't have had anyone else visiting us this week.

Tomorrow, my kids and I head to Texas. Not sure how long I'll be there, but even 24 hours will feed my need. We will swim and eat and watch movies and play at the library park. We will replenish ourselves for the next major event.

As far as feeling needed, hey, at least my husband and kids need me. Feeling sucked dry is better than feeling full of compassion and energy and having no receptacle for all of it. It's good to know your presence offers comfort.

So, stretch those three into ten this week. See ya next week if not sooner!

  1. Am I first here? I'm never first anywhere!
Sounds like you've had a week (a month?) that's been both draining and fulfilling at the same time, yes? Having company that acts like company is very different than having company that acts like part of your every day. I like that second kind so much better - no pretense, no dog-and-pony show.
I hope your trip to Texas is wonderful and fills you up to overflowing! Safe travels!

  7. have a great time in Texas ...take care of that eye and stomach. I think eye twitching means tiredness. but I'm not a doctor just think it might. It really is wonderful when we are able to reconnect with our friends.

    2. Yes, and stress. We have lots going on that isn't ready for the blog, if ever. These friends are truly wonderful≥.

  8. Consider them stretched, although I am fairly sure I counted ten, perhaps more :). Enjoy your trip to Texas (I love the tee on the gorgeous little one!) and feel better. Take care of you!

    1. Well, I think they were three big ones so easy stretchers. Isn't that tee funny? I found it at a thrift store for 50 cents and had to have it.

  9. trips!! (not sure if you're flying or driving) but anything more than 3/4s through an adjacent State qualifies as 'road trip'… and if there is any gift from the blog gods it is a trip (road or otherwise).
have much fun as is reasonably possible while remaining safe.

    1. Oh, yes, Clark, we share that love of the open road. Except when small people with low whine thresholds are involved. Independent road trips now.

  10. wow your houseguests sound AMAZING and fabulous! Are you driving to TX? Please say no. I drove to CO a few times from here and ugh. Sorry to hear about your stomach and your eye and LOVE the DC zoo. We must meet there one weekend day when it's not 100 okay? Safe trip! xo

  11. The zoo photo is adorable. Who said house guests and fish start to stink after 3 days? Seems like yours were wonderful. It is nice that everyone keeps coming to visit after you moved. Have fun in Texas.

    1. I don't know who said it originally, but I had a grandfather who liked to quote that line. Can't say if these guests would have gotten stinky. They stayed for three days.

  13. Too much company in too little time! But helpful guests are good guests:)
Since you should be in Texas and working on Day 1 of vacation, you should have no more twitching eyelids and upset stomach!
Enjoy your time away Sarah, relax and don't get a sunburn!

    1. Oh no, we only play outdoors in the early morning and late afternoon when it's tolerable. Course dry heat is easier to take than the humidity of the the mid-Atlantic!

  14. I can't believe you've had so many houseguests this month! That's what you get for being convenient to our nation's capitol!
I hate the twitchy eye thing. Ditto the upset tummy.

  16. Wow, you have had a lot of house guests! Sounds like they were lovely ones though :) I always get pretty anxious when I have several house guests staying in close succession, but at least it motivates me to clean the house up properly! I know what you mean about feeling needy and needed at the same time. Hope your eye and your tummy are better now. xx

    1. I'm hoping this succession of guests has broken that anxiety for me. I usually feel the same, but this time, I just haven't had time to!
I guess when you're feeling super needed, you end up needy because you're meeting others' needs instead of your own. And then you go out fishing for your own needs to be met.
