TToT95: The Shower That's Over

Oh, I am shameful. I skipped last week entirely. Truly, the weekend slipped by before I even thought of it.

And it's all because of the wedding shower. That is now over, thank heavens.

I am most very certainly not the kind of person who wants to head up an entertaining event. Nosirree. But somehow I found myself in that position, at the helm, and trying to mediate a group of strongly opinionated cohosts who were not...cooperative...with each other.

Weddings are hard, no doubt. No beginning without an ending, no joy without grief. I have a lot of sympathy for those whose passions are running high amidst wedding festivities. But seriously, how did you get to your age and without learning better social skills?!?!?!

But it's over. It went off without a hitch, and I think I may have helped host an event that was a reasonable compromise between non-traditional bride and traditional mother of the bride. Maybe. But, anyway, it's over.

I had my mother and sister to laugh with me when things got tense.

I got some subtle and not-so-subtle positive feedback from people who may not have chosen their words as carefully as they might have had they not had a few mimosas.

And it's over.

AND...I have my speaking voice back after a solid two weeks of hoarseness (still have an fun bass singing voice, though).

AND...I have a new phone.

    1. Well, it's a little rich coming from me since my social skills can definitely be lacking, but at the same time I know how to COMPROMISE!

  2. I totally agree with your comment about how to people get to their age without learning better social skills...or ANY social skills. That baffles me on almost a daily basis. I like how you took a not so perfect situation and found the things to be grateful for.

    1. Well, as I wrote above, I should probably bite my tongue since my social skills can be lacking plenty of times. It ended up being a pleasant event.

  3. Hey Sarah. Still the same phone number? Wedding showers and the influence of Pinterest on them is epic. My daughter is in wedding number 5 next year and already the shower preparations have begun. I have no doubt the shower was wonderful and you more than made up for the lack of social skills of your cohosts. It is about the bride, right?

    1. Yes, Pinterest, oh my. I got my ideas from there, but it is so OVERWHELMING! I think I can understand the bride's preference for low-key and simple so I tried to set that theme and stick with it.

  6. I got stuck being in charge of a wedding shower at work many, many years ago that I didn't want to put on. Fortunately, I had a committee, so I delegated EVERYTHING to different people, checked periodically on their progress, and got all the accolades for putting on such a lovely shower :)
I didn't get my TToT written last weekend until nearly the zero hour, but I made it, so I still haven't missed one since its inception (conception?). It was close, though!
NEW PHONE?! I need one badly! My battery has just about given up the ghost. What did you get?

    1. The group gets points for taking on tasks. I didn't do much other than clean my house and put up decorations. The issue was getting decisions made because people wouldn't budge and would shout at each other over email to the whole group. Seriously.
      iPhone 6s!!!

  7. A new phone is exciting.
    :-)
I attended a shower as well, but mine was a baby shower. Both are wonderful events, for good reasons, but party planning can come with some level of stress for sure.

  8. (newly recovered voice)…. and! a new phone to send it out over?! total win-win is all that is!
good that you weathered the social demands (funny how it is, in certain social contexts) that things would do without second thought, somehow become major demands (emotional and intellectual).
some weeks are good simply because they have a Saturday in 'em

    1. Well, hosting is never not a demand for me. But yes, things related to wedding are so hyped in emotion. Everything becomes more difficult.

  10. Your fun bass singing voice made me laugh. I so get that one. It's like who is that inside of me talking like that! LOL I'm sure that section of the choir will enjoy having another member until you can slip back into your own section. I'm not sure you sing in a choir, but that sort of behavior sometimes happens as people wait for their real voice to return.

Glad you made it through the whole shower experience.
